Hausa
Hausa has more native speakers than any other language in sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 22 million native speakers, plus an additional 17 million second language speakers. The main Hausa speaking area is northern Nigeria and Niger, but Hausa is also widely spoken in northern Ghana and northern Cameroon, and there are large Hausa communities in every major West African city.
Igdo
Igbo language is spoken in the southeastern region of Nigeria. The language is said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn mainly because it is not spoken anywhere else in the world. It is, however, one of the richest languages in Africa - from the Owerri-Ngwa-Umuahia variation, the Onitsha-Awka, Enugu-Abakaliki, Orlu-Okigwe, the Delta variation, to the Opobo-Ikwere variations. The language is rich in African proverbs and is spoken by more than 20 million people across Nigeria.
Wolof
Native Wolof speakers account for 43% of the Senegalese population. Wolof is also spoken by a sizable number of people in The Gambia and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Because of that Wolof serves as a link between the Moslem world of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. It also links the anglophone speaking Gambia with its French neighbor, Senegal. In addition to these Wolof is spoken by more than 90% of the Senegalese population. Out of the six national Languages of Senegal, Wolof is the most widely spoken because of its socio-economic importance. Wolof plays a very important role in Senegalese culture. The majority of the Senegalese musicians sing in Wolof, even though it may not be their native language. The well-known Senegalese filmmakers, Sembene Ousmane and the late Djibril Diop Mambety produce their films in Wolof, and they are viewed worldwide.
Yoruba
Yoruba is the first language of approximately 30 million West Africans, and is spoken by populations in Southwestern Nigeria, Togo, Benin, and Sierra Leone. Yoruba is a dialect continuum including distinctive dialects (Bamgbose, 1966). The estimation of the total number of Yoruba dialects vary from twelve to twenty-six (Ojo (1977), Adetugbo (1982), Oyelaran (1970, 1992), Mustapha (1987)).
